Guidelines for Session Chairs

Thank you for agreeing to chair a session at the Symposium on Second Language Writing 2007. The session chair's job is to ensure that the session goes smoothly and that all presenters have adequate time for their presentations and questions/discussion. Here are the specific tasks:

  1. Arrive a few minutes early to meet the presenters. Ask if they have anything they'd like you to mentioned during the introduction (optional).
  2. At the session start time, ask the audience to take a seat and announce the beginning of the session, mentioning the names of the presenters.
  3. If the speaker for the first presentation is not there on time, let the audience know and wait for half an hour before starting the second presentation. Do not start the second presentation early.
  4. Announce the first speaker's name, institutional affiliation and the presentation title. Provide additional information if requested by the presenters. Please keep the introduction brief.
  5. Assist the presenter(s) with handouts, if any.
  6. Monitor the presentation time and keep the presenter aware of the time limit. (Each presentation should be about 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.)
  7. After 30 minutes, stop the first speaker and introduce the second speaker.
  8. Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 for the second speaker.
  9. At the end of the schedule session time, stop the discussion promptly and ask the audience to thank the presenters.
