Area Information

The Auckland urban area, in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest and most populated urban area in the country. Auckland has a population of 1,418,000, which constitutes 32 percent of the country's population. The isthmus was settled by Māori around 1350, and was valued for its rich and fertile land. Many (fortified villages) were created, mainly on the volcanic peaks. Auckland also boasts an excellent museum, with daily performances by the original inhabitants of New Zealand, telling of their history before European settlers arrived.

For hiking enthusiasts, there are many small mountains to climb (aka dormant volcanoes, 50+ in total), while longer day trips can be taken in the Waitakere Ranges at the western border of the city. Go to the following site for further information.

If you are lucky enough to stay on longer, before or after the conference, do take the opportunity to visit other parts of this great country. As a major vacation destination, New Zealand has the following selection of recommended experiences to complete your New Zealand holiday.
