Both SSLW and the SLW Institute will take place Thursday, October 20 through Saturday, October 22, 2016.
Early registration and check in starts in the afternoon on Wednesday, October 19, followed by the pre-symposium social—from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
On Thursday, October 20, the registration desk opens at 8:00 a.m. The Symposium will kick off at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and concludes at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.
Session Schedule. The tentative schedule of sessions and events—including date, time, title and and presenter names—is available here. Presenters, please check the information for accuracy and for any schedule conflicts.
Early Check-In. If you arrive early and would like to pick up your program and name tag, you can stop by Paul Kei Matsuda's Office, Room 304 in Durham Language and Literature Building (LL 304) between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Pre-Symposium Social (RSVP requested). If you are arriving before Wednesday evening, many of the participants and invited speakers will be getting together for the Pre-Symposium Social on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shady Park (26 E University Dr, Tempe, AZ 85281; +1-480-557-8226). In addition to the pub food, you can order ramen from Umami, which is adjacent to Shady Park. (Please order food and drinks on your own.) Please RSVP using this form.
Program Book. The Program Book (PDF, 1.5MB) is available here. If you are on the program as a presenter or session chair, please check the program for any last-minute changes. A hard copy version will be available for you at the Registration and Check-In Desk.
Registration Desk. Registration and Check-In Desk will be located in the Alumni Lounge on the second floor of the Memorial Union. The hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday.
Book Exhibits. The Book Exhibits will be located in the Alumni Lounge on the second floor of the Memorial Union. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday. Refreshments will be available in the Exhibits area.

Plenary talks. Plenary talks are scheduled at the beginning and at the end of the three-day event. The speakers, Alister Cumming and Diane Belcher, are two of the original “experts” from the first SSLW in 1998.
Colloquia. There are two kinds of colloquia: invited and proposed. Invited colloquia are special sessions that address key issues related to the theme from various perspectives. Proposed colloquia are groups of papers that address a coherent theme from different perspectives.
Papers. Papers are 30-minute presentations on any topic related to second language writing.
Roundtables. Roundtable sessions are 20-minute informal presentations for the purpose of generating discussion or getting feedback on preliminary or work-in-progress work.
Institute. Second Language Writing Institute, open to all SSLW 2016 participants, provides workshops that help the participants develop expertise in various aspects of second lan-guage writing. The seats are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Reflections. A reflection session at the end of each day provides an opportunity for sharing your thoughts about expertise in second language writing as well as other key issues that emerged during sessions and informal conversations.
